Fraunhofer IGD

Fraunhofer ist mit 57 Instituten, mehr als 6.000 Mitarbeitern und 900 Mio. € Umsatz die größte angewandte F & E-Gesellschaft in Deutschland. 60% der Umsätze werden durch Auftragsforschung, 40% durch öffentliche Förderung generiert. Neben den Instituten in Deutschland, hat FhG Standorte in Asien (Peking, Tokio, Jakarta), den USA (Plymouth) und ein Büro in Brüssel. Das FhG ist in Clustern organisiert, wobei die IuK (Informations- and Kommunikationstechnologien) aus 17 Instituten besteht.

Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung (Fh-IGD) gehört zum IuK-Cluster und ist in verschiedenen Bereichen der Computergrafik tätig. Die wichtigste Niederlassung des Fh-IGDist  in Darmstadt, Deutschland, weitere befinden sich in Rostock (Deutschland), Graz (Österreich) und Singapur. Insgesamt verfügt IGD über mehr als 140 Mitarbeiter und zusätzlich über mehr als 200 FTE Forscher. Das gesamte jährliche Budget beträgt 15 Mio. €. Die Forschung der IGD ist in drei Hauptbereiche eingeteilt: Semantik in der Modellierung, Zusammenfluss von Grafiken und Vision, und digitalen Dokumenten im Allgemeinen. IGD ist in neun verschiedenen Geschäftsbereichen aktiv, darunter Semantik Visualisierung, Virtual Reality Modeling und Semantik.

Key staff

Dr.-Ing. Jörn Kohlhammer studied Computer Science at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, Germany, where he received his MS (Dipl.-Inform.). From 1999 he worked as a full-time researcher at the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics (CRCG) in Providence, RI, USA. He received his doctoral degree from TU Darmstadt for his research on "Knowledge Representation for Decision-Centred Visualisation". Since 2004 he heads the Fraunhofer IGD department of "Realtime Solutions for Simulation and Visual Analytics" with currently 10 employees. Jörn Kohlhammer has coordinated the FET Open project VisMaster CA with 26 partners and is coordinator of the EU project VIS-SENSE. The Fraunhofer headquarters give support in efficiently and successfully managing the participation in EU projects.

Kawa Nazemi graduated in Media and Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences Giessen-Friedberg in 2006. Henceforth he worked as researcher at the Fraunhofer IGD and was involved in several national and European projects, where he developed user-centered systems for knowledge representations. In 2007 he overtake the leadership and management of the THESEUS project Innovative User Interfaces and Visualizations, where he established a research group focused on semantics visualization. Since 2011 he leads the research group Semantics Visualization and is the deputy head of the associated department. His research interests are focused on technologies and concepts for user-, context-, and content-adaptive knowledge representation and intelligent visualizations.

Christian Stab holds a diploma in Computer Sciences from the Technical University Darmstadt. In his diploma thesis, which was awarded with the Fraunhofer IGD “Best Thesis Award”, he developed an Interaction Analysis System that is used in the THESEUS Core Technology Cluster for analyzing user’s behavior in the context of Adaptive User Interfaces (AUI).

He was involved in various European research and development projects, where he developed collaborative tools and knowledge management systems. He was involved in the THESEUS Core Technology Cluster for Semantics Visualization and user-centered adaption and is the project leader of VIntEL (“Virtuelle Integrierte Erprobungslandschaft”) and MErK (“Management von Ergebnissen und Erkenntnissen aus CD&E”). His research interests are focused on Tempo-Analytical Semantics, Semantics Visualization and Intelligent User Interfaces. Further he researches on intuitive interaction concepts for Semantics Visualizations and supervises practical courses at the Technical University Darmstadt.

Dirk Burkhardt holds a diploma in Computer Sciences from the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz. His research interests are focused on concepts and technologies for user-centered process modeling and process support especially based on visualization technologies. He also researches in gesture-based multimodal interactions for intuitive interactions and navigations within graphical user-interfaces.
